Heike Hoffmann

Heike Hoffmann graduated in Arts and Theatre Sciences. After working in the Artists’ Agency and the Association of Composers and Musicologists of the GDR she was appointed in 1990 as director of the Music Biennale Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall this project was organised under the auspices of the Berliner Festspiele and became an internationally renowned festival of contemporary music which she directed until 2001. From 1994 to 2008, Heike Hoffmann was director of artistic planning and production at the Konzerthaus Berlin. In this function she was responsible not only for the concert series of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (now known as Konzerthausorchester Berlin) and about 300 annual performances in the Konzerthaus, but also for devising and organising several festivals and concert series on specific themes. During these years Heike Hoffmann developed new concert and performance formats and organised tours and international co-productions. Furthermore, she was active in several other projects and served on committees. For instance, from 1997 to 2001, she was responsible for restructuring and organising the International Composition Seminar in Boswil (Switzerland) and from 2005 to 2008 chaired a jury at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. In 1990, Heike Hoffmann was co-founder of an independent Society for New Music in the GDR and until its fusion with the Society of New Music of the German Federal Republic its executive manager. In 1999, she co-founded the Réseau Varèse – Réseau Européen pour la Création et la Diffusion musicales and from 2002 until 2008 served as its vice-president. From 1991 until 1994, she was a member of the board of the Stiftung Kulturfonds, and from 2002 until 2004 member and spokeswoman of the jury of the German Federal Foundation for Culture. She was also an active member of other juries, including the Villa Aurora Los Angeles, the Netzwerk Neue Musik, sponsorship programmes of the Land Berlin, and of the Villa Massimo Rome. Since 2001 she has been a member of the board of the Experimental Studio of SWR and since 2009 deputy chairwoman of the board of musik21 Lower Saxony.
In future the main focus of her work will be the Salzburg Biennale. She will continue to work as an author and as consultant for festivals in Germany and the USA, and she will remain involved in various other artistic projects.
